Dive into oceanography with Mercator’s new Ocean Explainers!

From outlining the importance of the oceans to highlighting the current policies put in place to protect them, the Ocean Explainers summarise – and yes, explain – the fundamentals of oceanography through both various definitions and visuals.

After almost nine months of intensive work by our EJR-Quartz and Science Office team we are pleased to be able to announce our role in a new series of Ocean Explainer webpages, published by the Copernicus Marine Service, implemented by Mercator Ocean International on behalf of the European Commission.

The pages aim to expand common knowledge about the ocean and make it accessible to all. Terms such as deoxygenation, eutrophication, and acidification are mentioned by the media increasingly often, but their meaning and implication are not always clear. And what about operational oceanography, data processing, Earth modelling, and ocean modelling? To bring these concepts within anyone’s reach, we helped develop these pages for the Copernicus Marine Service from concept to finish.

EJR-Quartz and Science Office have worked together to not only compose these pages, but also create infographics and animations, and promote them on various platforms. The text, combined with infographics, animations and a comprehensive user platform, is the result of nine months of hard work, and we are proud to finally see these pages live.

The information found on these pages covers an array of topics, through three key themes:

  • Phenomena and threats: covers the impacts of anthropogenic climate change on the ocean, such as ocean warming and acidification
  • Policies: summarises the strategies put in place to protect the ocean
  • Operational oceanography: presents the science behind oceanography.

Studying the ocean is becoming increasingly necessary to understand the ocean-climate nexus, the myriad of effects brought by climate change, pollution and other such threats. The more we know about our ocean, the better we can conserve it.

You can explore the full Ocean Explainers on the Copernicus Marine Service’s website. We hope that these new pages will prove useful to you!

Issue 168 of the DLRmagazine is out!

The latest edition of the DLRmagazine, the German Aerospace Center’s modern science communications publication, is now available – with a little help from us!  EJR-Quartz is responsible for the English edition of this publication.

In the latest issue of the DLRmagazine we delve into the fascinating world of quantum computing with the cover story ‘Qubits hit the ground running’. Quantum computers have long been considered among the most exciting future scientific prospects. The article provides an insight into the unprecedented possibilities afforded by the new technology and highlights the many ways in which DLR is involved through its Quantum Computing Initiative.

Next, we’re treated to an overview of Matthias Maurer’s Cosmic Kiss mission. The German ESA astronaut is scheduled to launch to the International Space Station (ISS) on 31 October 2021. In the ‘Cosmic heartbeat’ article we learn about Maurer’s preparation for the mission and the experiments that will take place on board the ISS.

Once again, wind and solar energy play a central role in this issue, as we get a sneak peek of the currently under construction Krummendeich Research Wind Farm and celebrate the 10th anniversary of the DLR Institute of Solar Research.

But there’s much more! NASA’s asteroid mission Lucy, which was launched on 16 October, is given an extensive presentation, and we dive into the DLR Central Archive to pay tribute to the ‘female computers’ – the young women who performed calculations for DLR’s predecessor organisations.

As always, the DLRmagazine features news, articles, interviews, retrospectives and media reviews. How does that sound? You can download issue 168 in digital format or subscribe to receive a printed copy of the magazine free of charge.

Happy reading!

Prioritising wellness

After a tough 2020 and no sign of let-up to the COVID-19 lockdown situation as the majority of us rung in 2021 still separated from friends and family, EJR-Quartz brightened up one dreary Monday in January with a surprise email in our inbox gifting us a “wellness bonus”. We read on with curiosity as we learned it should be spent on something good for our mental or physical wellness, perhaps to help manage our stress levels and provide some relief in such gloomy days. There was a caveat, though: we weren’t to spend it entirely on chocolate!

From aromatherapy oils and bikes, to home massages, psychology sessions and yoga classes, here’s how some of our team have been inspired with this encouraging initiative this year.

“I used my wellness bonus for yoga classes – working on defying gravity in a slightly different way!”
– Elly, Editor

“Like many people, I spent much of 2020 in lockdown brushing up on my cooking skills including making pizzas, lasagne, fajitas and curries. This ultimately led to me putting on a few extra kg, so I decided to use the wellness voucher to get in shape! So far I have bought running shoes for my 10Ks, a Fitbit to track my steps, a new digital scale and yoga mat for stretching.”
– Romina, Earth Observation Editor

“I bought a new bike so that I can explore more of the Netherlands whilst not being able to travel abroad. I’m also taking ‘RockFit’ classes, which are
good exercise AND great fun!”
– Nicole, Science editor

“I bought a new hiking backpack I’ve been using for trips, including one where I hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon! Getting out of the city into nature is one of the things that recharges me the most – the wilder the better! But I hadn’t bought a new hiking backpack in a long time and needed one that was more comfortable and fit me better in order to make those wild adventures more enjoyable. After its big adventure in the US I have my eye on some hiking closer to home, including the new Dutch Mountain Trail.”
– Sarah, Science editor

“I’m spending my voucher on an osteopath who is
making the pain in my back and arm go away.”
– Karina, EJR-Quartz operations manager

“The best things I have bought so far are a bike helmet and shorts, which have brought me to some nice adventures this summer. I use the workouts as an excuse for some me-time!”

– Chiara, social media editor

“I bought a treadmill. Running always improves my mood and creativity, but it’s been challenging to always find time with a small baby at home, and especially when we are all in lockdown. Now I can get a workout in even when he is sleeping, or simply if the weather is totally uninspiring to go out.”

– Emily, Space science editor

“Hearing that Emily bought a treadmill made me think I could actually create my own gym at home! I already had a spin bike and online gym subscription, but was a bit nervous about an actual gym subscription if COVID cases rose again. I have since invested in a rowing machine and I’m really happy. I can squeeze a few minutes in at lunchtime or go for a longer session after work and I’m finding that regular exercise, even if it is at home, is super helpful in improving my general mood and productivity.”
– Ally, Human and robotic space exploration editor

I’ve been exploring aromatherapy oils. It has helped me with my mental and physical well-being, from using different oils in diffuser and inhaling the scents to also making oil mixtures and using topically to help with muscle pains and headaches. As the oils are organic high grade they can also be taken orally, so occasionally I’ll add a drop of lemon oil to water for a refreshing drink (peppermint is also revitalising!). I am enjoying the benefits of the essential oils so much that I have now become a Wellness Advocate for DoTERRA!”
– Beverley, Office manager

“I bought roller skates to go skating with my six year old round our neighbourhood. I’m loving doing this activity with her and reliving my 80s childhood! I’ve also subscribed to a fitness website and yoga classes – which I totally intend to get back into after the summer ice cream eating season is over..!”
– Georgie, Editor for internal communications

In what has certainly been a strange and challenging 18 months, with so many of us being expats far away from family with no clear idea as to when we might see each other again, it is the little things like this that make a big difference in feeling supported and appreciated while the world is upside down. A big thank you from all of us to our lovely bosses for this thoughtful initiative!

Helping the Copernicus Climate Change Service capture a year of conditions in Europe

How unusual do you think last year’s weather was? And how does this relate to climate change? The Copernicus Climate Change Service’s recently released European State of the Climate 2020 can help give you the answers! For the fourth year in a row, EJR-Quartz worked within a large team of collaborators to create the report and an accompanying publicity campaign.

The European State of the Climate’s focus is providing a snapshot of conditions in Europe for one year, alongside longer-term data. This allows readers to understand how day-to-day weather events fit into a changing climate across the continent and around the rest of the world. The report covers a range of variables and events; some familiar, like average temperatures, heatwaves and storms, as well as some that might seem less obvious, like sunshine duration, soil moisture, river flow and lake surface temperatures.

EJR-Quartz’s role in the project was to ensure that the entire report had a consistent, accessible voice and visual presentation – no small task for a report tens of thousands of words long, written by dozens of people from institutions across Europe. We also created a social media campaign that attracted attention from hundreds of thousands of Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram users, and managed the creation of animations and visuals with our own Science Office and external partners.

Coordinating all of this just up our street, requiring attention to detail, working in highly collaborative diverse teams, and a thorough understanding of both the scientific content and the communications best practices to ensure it was accessible to a non-specialist audience.

The report can be found on the Copernicus Climate Change Service website, where you can explore it online, read a focused summary with the main takeaways or watch a video overview.

Extra, extra! The latest DLRmagazine is out!

The latest edition of the DLRmagazine, the German Aerospace Center’s modern science communications publication, is now available – with a little help from us! EJR-Quartz is responsible for the English edition of this publication.

The first DLRmagazine of 2021 – ‘The sky is the limit’ – contains articles highlighting the importance of thoughts and ideas for the advancement of science, and how digitalisation is making this possible. DLRmagazine 167 features the work of innovative scientists both in the laboratory and outside of it. Despite travel restrictions due to the Coronavirus pandemic, DLR researchers are thinking about how we can travel more safely and comfortably from A to B, whether by air or on the road. They are looking into improved and safe cabin designs, as well as the automated transport systems of the future.

Further to this, the topic of digitalisation also plays an important role in this issue. What are the advantages and challenges of virtual flight tests and to what extent do they match the effectiveness of their real-life counterparts? DLR researchers have long been working on the question of where we still need experiments and what we can do faster and more economically using computers.

But there’s much more! This year, DLR celebrates the 60th anniversary of its Stuttgart site. And, can you believe that 60 years have passed since the first human spaceflight by Yuri Gagarin? In this edition of the DLRmagazine, German ESA astronaut Reinhold Ewald takes us to Star City and Baikonur, to ‘relive’ that historic day.

Sound interesting? Subscribe to the DLRmagazine to receive it on your doorstep free of charge. If you’d rather read it online, the DLRmagazine can also be downloaded as a PDF.

Helping you discover the SKAO’s mission

The Science Office was approached by SKAO’s Communications & Outreach department to develop an animation that would convey, in 60 to 90 seconds, their vision and values, the main aspects of their research, their network and that would also unveil their new image. And it had to be done is less than a month! Not an easy task, but through a very collaborative and close process between the two teams, we made it.

In January 2021, Square Kilometre Array (SKA) became an intergovernmental organisation – SKA Observatory (SKAO) – and now has a new brand that aligns with its vision, its mission and the values that define its identity and make it unique: diversity and inclusion, excellence, collaboration, creativity and innovation, and sustainability. The new logo and visual identity stem from these.

Still from the SKAO animation. Credit: SKAO

As part of this brand unveiling, we were happy to produce the ‘Discover the SKAO’s mission’ video, the first glimpse at SKAO’s new look. The video was released during SKAO’s Council meeting and has now been published in all their online platforms and social media channels.
